These internal tubes were not random. They formed long, looping airways that connected the nasal passages to the crest and back into the skull.

Recreating Dinosaur Sounds Digitally

Using the CT data, scientists created detailed digital models of the crest’s internal structure. They then simulated airflow moving through these passages, similar to how air moves through wind instruments.

The results produced deep, low-frequency sounds, closer to a foghorn than a bird call. These sounds would have traveled long distances across open floodplains and forests.

Why Would Parasaurolophus Make These Sounds?

Researchers believe these low-frequency calls likely played an important role in communication. Possible uses include:

Maintaining contact within herds, recognizing members of the same species, or signaling during mating displays. Low-frequency sounds are especially effective in dense vegetation, where visibility is limited.
